Zooey Deschanel might be playing the "New Girl," but the actress has found a home on FOX, now that the network has picked up a full-season of the comedy series.
"We love the charming Zooey Deschanel and the entire cast, we're knocked out with the work that [creator] Liz Meriwether and the whole staff is doing and we are really psyched about the upcoming episodes in the pipeline," Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment at FOX said in a statement. "It's great that audiences have responded so positively so far and we're confident that even more people will embrace the show -- and more comedy on Fox -- this season."
The show premiered on Tuesday, September 20 on Fox and the pilot episode was free for download on iTunes and streaming on Hulu. FOX ordered 11 additional episodes of the quirky comedy, for a 24-episode debut season.
The show, which airs after FOX's "Glee," outperformed the hit musical comedy series, earning 10.1 million viewers in its series debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The second episode brought in 9.3 million viewers.
Speaking of her new role, Deschanel told the Associated Press, "I made a career being cast as smart-aleck-type characters, but I'm not sarcastic at all. I'm not ironic. I'm very sincere, generally. So this role played into a part of myself that I hadn't been using on the screen."
Her character, named Jess Day, is an awkward 20-something who finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her and is forced to live on her own. Day moves in to an apartment with three male roommates and largely spends her time in the pilot crying in their living room while watching "Dirty Dancing" and singing to herself.
The pilot was written by "No Strings Attached" writer Liz Meriwether.
"Jess is a person who spent six years with the same guy. She's not a dater. And now she's being put out there in a way she's never been before. She's a little bit guileless and tries to see the best in people," Deschanel told the wire service. "And you know THAT always goes wrong!"
"She's different from me in some ways," the actress said. "But there's a part of myself that really is her: 13-year-old me was very much Jess -- optimistic, excited all the time. A lot of these things that Jess is, I feel like are at my core."
"New Girl" will welcome guest stars Justin Long and Lake Bell and the next two episodes will air at a special time, on Wednesday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 18 at 9:30 p.m. on FOX.
Deschanel has had a role on the television show "Weeds" and appeared on an episode of the Fox drama "Bones" alongside her sister Emily Deschanel, where she played a distant cousin of Emily Deschanel's character.
The actress recently starred alongside Paul Rudd, Rashida Jones and Elizabeth Banks in the comedy "Our Idiot Brother" and has starred in films like "Elf," "(500) Days of Summer" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Actress/singer Zooey Deschanel stopped by The Grove to chat with "Extra's" Mario Lopez about her new hit FOX show, "New Girl, dancing like a chicken, and being an aunt.
Deschanel described her character, Jess, as being a little bit like her. "I think she's the 13-year-old me," she laughed. "I'm not mature at all. I'm more like 15."
Zooey was excited about Tuesday's episode. "Nick, one of the characters, his girlfriend just dumped him six months ago. We are going to a wedding and I have to pretend to be his girlfriend to make his ex jealous."
The quirky star did say there might be some dancing, such as the Chicken Dance. "Maybe! I don't want to give it away... I'm a passable dancer, but I love to dance."

On her sister, "Bones" actress Emily Deschanel's new son, Zooey gushed, "He's so cute. He's 2 weeks old, doesn't do much yet. He touches his face a lot. Hey, he didn't know he had a face! I'd touch my face a lot if I just found out I had a face two weeks ago!"
The singer also said her folk duo She & Him -- which she described as "Arena Folk" ("Folk music you can listen to in an arena") -- will release a Christmas album in October. "I know it's early, but it's to get people ready for the holidays."
Tune-in to "New Girl," Tuesdays on FOX!

Zooey Deschanel Signs On for FOX Comedy Pilot
posted by addict on 10 Mar 2011
Category : Presse
It's official. Zooey Deschanel is permanently moving to the small screen with her new untitled TV pilot. FOX has signed the actress in a new comedy show, penned by Liz Meriweather who also wrote the Natalie Portman rom-com No Strings Attached.

Originally titled Chicks and Dicks (which will definitely change now because it'll never fly as a sitcom title), the single-camera comedy is an ensemble about a girl (chicks) and three guys (dicks). The lead character is a woman named Jessica who is an unlucky-in-love elementary school teacher. She decides to move in with three guys after she breaks up with her boyfriend.

The project will explore the sexual politics of men and women, which sounds like a familiar role for Deschanel whose past screen credits seem to be this type of 'one of the boys' character.

Previously, she almost always kept to small budget and indie flicks like Almost Famous and My Idiot Brother. We'll see how her hipster ways fare on a major corporate broadcasting network.

Zooey Deschanel sues Steve Madden over breach of contract; Actress says he owes her $2 million

Actress and singer Zooey Deschanel is suing shoe scion Steve Madden for $2 million.
The blue-eyed thespian and chanteuse claims that Madden promised her the money in exchange for being the face of a line of shoes, according to court documents posted by Eonline.com.
Her agents at CAA allege that Deschanel was to receive the money whether or not her line of shoes and accesories came to fruition.
According to legal documents, a retailer wasn't so keen on the Deschanel deal and Madden tried to offer Zooey half a million dollars less.
Deschanel accepted the reduced deal but claims that Madden has breached their agreement since he yet to pay her the $1,500,000.
Madden, a native New Yorker, knows his way around a courtroom.
The trendy shoe seller was sentenced to 41 months in prison back in 2002 for his role in a stock scheme.
Deschanel isn't exactly hurting for work.
Besides being a successful actress in films such as "(500) Day of Summer" and the cult indie film "All the Real Girls," she also records with musicians including M. Ward.
The doll-faced beauty also hawks for U.K. beauty line Rimmel.
